The State of Home Remodeling

The Current State of Home Remodeling in Southern California

Southern California’s home remodeling market remains active in 2026, driven by homeowners who are choosing to improve their existing properties rather than move. With mortgage rates still relatively high and housing inventory gradually increasing, many homeowners are investing in renovations that add comfort, functionality, and long-term value.

Kitchen and bathroom remodels continue to be among the most popular projects, while accessory dwelling units (ADUs), home offices, and indoor-outdoor living spaces remain in high demand. Energy-efficient upgrades are also becoming a priority as California’s building codes and sustainability requirements continue to evolve.

At the same time, remodeling costs remain elevated. Labor shortages, permitting requirements, and higher material prices continue to affect project budgets throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and other Southern California markets. Contractors report that permitting, code compliance, and specialized labor can significantly increase both costs and timelines.

Despite these challenges, homeowners remain optimistic about remodeling. Many see renovations as a practical alternative to purchasing a new home, especially when existing properties can be adapted for changing family needs, remote work, or rental income opportunities through ADUs. As a result, the Southern California remodeling industry is expected to remain resilient, with demand centered on quality upgrades, energy efficiency, and maximizing property value.
